Community Awareness Program: Human-Elephant Conflict Prevention

On August 2nd and 3rd, we successfully organized and concluded a community awareness program as part of our effort to reduce the impact of roaming wild elephants particularly tuskers in the Galgamuwa region and the resulting threats faced by villagers. The event took place in four key village areas around Galgamuwa and Ambanpola, where the tusker Kavantissa is known to frequently roam these days.

Our Awareness Program Details

Program Overview

We conducted comprehensive awareness sessions over two days in four key village areas around Galgamuwa and Ambanpola, focusing on the tusker Kavantissa who is known to frequently roam in these areas. Our team educated villagers about elephant behavior, safety measures, and introduced our Elephant Journey mobile application for real-time elephant sighting reports.

Special Mention

When we arrived at Nelumpathwewa, we saw many people gathering to see Kavantissa after they heard he was nearby. This showed their deep love and respect for elephants.

Community Response and Support

Overwhelming Positive Response

The villagers responded very positively, expressing how essential such a solution is. Many mentioned that they were previously receiving elephant-related alerts through phone calls, but appreciated that this app enables wider and faster community awareness.

The communities we visited clearly understood and appreciated the importance of Kavantissa and the need to coexist safely with these majestic animals.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments

We are deeply grateful to all the wildlife photographers, elephant and wildlife enthusiasts, school friends, local residents, and everyone who supported us — even those who couldn't attend in person. Special thanks to everyone who contributed to providing lunch and helped us print and distribute the awareness leaflets.

We're thankful to the media teams from Ada Derana, Swarnavahini, and YouTubers who attended and covered the event. Their support will be invaluable in making future awareness campaigns even stronger.

The Ambanpola Police, Galgamuwa Wildlife Office, Divisional Secretariat, and local Grama Niladhari officers were all informed about the event. We extended open invitations to all officials to ensure proper coordination and support.

Our Mission Continues

Through programs like this, our hope is to inspire more people to step forward and carry on this mission. If anyone is interested in organizing a similar initiative, we are more than happy to provide the matching awareness materials free of charge.

Together, we can help communities live in harmony with elephants.

Awareness is conservation.
