Court Fines Suspect for Using Hakkapatas

A person who had used Hakkapatas targeting wild elephants with the intention of killing them was arrested by the Galgamuwa wildlife officers during a raid carried out in the Galgamuwa–Nahettikulama area on August 1, 2025.

The case was then taken up on November 13 at the Galgamuwa Magistrate’s Court, and the suspect was fined Rs. 150,000.

Appreciation is extended to the Galgamuwa Wildlife Range Officer and the wildlife officials for properly carrying out the operation and legal proceedings. Such heavy fines serve as an important deterrent to prevent these crimes.

Many injured elephants found in the Getadivula area are harmed due to activities in those regions, and penalties must be imposed on wildlife offenders living there.
