Early this morning (18th), a 2.5-year-old elephant calf was killed in a vehicle collision at an elephant crossing point on the Anuradhapura–Padeniya road near Galgamuwa town. The van involved in the collision fled the scene, and the calf died on the spot.
Although warning signs had been installed, such accidents continue to occur due to vehicles speeding without regard for marked zones. This incident happened directly in front of one such warning sign.
