For several days, officers from the Nikaweratiya Veterinary Office together with the Galgamuwa Wildlife Department have been attempting to treat Manabharana, an elephant suffering from a foot ailment. Their previous efforts failed because the elephant frequently changed his travel routes and, when moving with the herd, could not be properly targeted for treatment.
Yesterday morning (30), the herd moved toward Palukadawala, so today (01) officials stationed themselves at the Palukadawala–Getadivula crossing point. However, instead of going to Palukadawala, the herd arrived at Getadivula. At first, Manabharana was not visible, but suddenly appeared, crossed the road from another location, and slipped into the Getadivula reserve. Although the officers followed, the elephant moved quickly and evaded them.
Another elephant, Missaka, was also with the herd. He too entered the Getadivula reserve. Officials fear that if a serious fight breaks out between Manabharana and Missaka, the already injured Manabharana will be at a severe disadvantage. According to villagers, a clash was reported this morning, most likely involving these two elephants.
Treating Manabharana is proving extremely difficult, not only because of his changing routes but also because his behavior differs greatly from what the officials expect. Authorities say another attempt will most likely be made tomorrow.
